Today while I was walking in the halls I heard a group of people talking about the college playoff game for football last night. They were talking about how most of those guys are just dumb jocks. Which is interesting to think about considering that those “dumb jocks” typically have higher required GPA’s than the average student. Sure there are academic situations where some athletes get special privileges but there are also multiple cases of academic all-americans in multiple sports where there are athletes getting academic honors WHILE playing sports. While labels and stereotypes will likely never go away, it’s frustrating to see a major contradiction. When selection bias occurs (if it’s good you accept it but bad you don’t or if you see someone doing something bad you point it out but fail to point out their good traits) unfair judgment occurs.
