Day 3 Teacher

It’s funny in a way that I would come to this as a term. Not because teaching is a bad profession or anything like that. It’s just for as long as I can remember, people have always told me that I should go into teaching and I’ve always responded with it’s just not something I really want to do. I have nothing against teachers, in fact both of my parents are teachers. In reality most people are teachers. Even if you are just teaching yourself something you are still a teacher of sorts. Sure you might not have an academic license & it might just be how to balance a spoon on your nose, but there is still learning occurring and you are the one facilitating it.

I think the reason that being a teacher for me is so uncomfortable is that I don’t know how other people think. I can only teach in the way that I think makes the most sense. Which if you read Day 2, you might have a pretty clear understanding that sometimes how I think is a little strange to some people. Another reason that I don’t feel like teaching is something I want to go into isn’t because I don’t think I can do it, rather as I mentioned I feel everyone is a teacher. Again I’m not trying to say anything bad about teachers, in fact I have a lot of respect for teachers (although I’m sure some of my teachers might look very quizzically upon that statement). For me though it relates in a way to making the world a better place, if by helping to teach others I can make the world even a little different then it’s worth it. So I don’t have to be in a school to teach. I can be a coach, I can be a public speaker, or I could even just be someone writing a blog.

The inspiring thing to me is that some people think in questions. Which now that wikipedia is a somewhat credible source (yes I said it, but that doesn’t mean your college professor will accept a paper with it as a source), information is available basically whenever you want it. That means that you can teach yourself amazing things. Then maybe it will inspire you to help someone else understand about that. Then so on and so on. The spreading of information is pretty amazing in and of itself.

The one unexpected blessing that I’ve been lucky enough to receive is people who have been there for me through my education. Having mentors, teachers, parents, siblings, and friends to teach me along the way is truly amazing. I can’t really explain how grateful I am to those people, and it’s part of the reason that I desire to give back even a little of what has been given to me.

Maybe in trying to help others I will someday be able to help someone as much as I’ve been helped. Maybe someday I will be a good enough example to inspire others to take a plunge such as writing a blog all about yourself. Maybe someday I’ll be on the list of someone’s favorite teachers. I don’t know if that day will come, so all I can do for now is to say that learning never stops and that you can always be teaching. So take the next 5 minutes to search for and learn about something random that you’ve always just been a little bit curious about. Then feel free to share what you’ve learned in the comments section so that maybe you can teach others today too.
